Why are they called survival crackers?

Interesting name, right? This name was given to these crackers because of how long they seemed to last. They were first introduced during the era of the Cold War, an era where food items needed to last a long time without molding. Otherwise, they were created to be shelf-stable.

People would keep this on hand knowing that they would be able to eat it long after they purchased it. This made sense since there were many areas that struggled with having enough food.

What else are survival crackers called?

Survival crackers have been called a few different names over time. Obviously, the most popular reference is survival crackers, but they’re also known as hardtack and doomsday crackers, too.

Other names were Tooth Dullers, Ship’s Biscuits, and even Worm Castles! Talk about some interesting names!

How long is hardtack good for?

Back in the day, it was said that hardtack was good for up to 3 months, which was a really long shelf life! Making your own at home now may not last near that long, but they will have the same type of texture and flavor.

What does hardtack taste like?

To be honest, it’s a super bland cracker. It’s also really, really hard. While you can eat these crackers on their own, they’re great for dipping into soups and soaking up the broth.

Is hardtack still made?

It is! There is still a major company that makes it and actually ends up shipping about 98% of the production to Alaska.

Why does this survival cracker recipe last so long?

The reason that these last so long is that the cooking process takes out all of the moisture. This helps to preserve them in a way that makes them last.

What is the best way to eat doomsday crackers?

Dipping them in soup, or in a tea or coffee would be the best way to help soften them up so that they’re easier to eat.

These crackers are pretty hard – and they’re supposed to be. They’re not a soft and savory texture like other crackers.

Some people would actually crush them up and then mix in some hot water and sugar to create a sort of simple and easy dessert. You could always try that as well!

How to store

Even though these crackers are meant to last a bit longer, you still need to store them in an airtight container. I like to keep them cool in the fridge, but it’s not a requirement to do so.

Can you freeze these survival food crackers?

You can. If you want to store a batch in the freezer, do so. Just add them to an airtight container and then place them in the freezer.

When you’re ready to eat them, remove them from the freezer and place them in the fridge to start the thawing process.

Do these depression-era crackers go bad?

Yes, they will. They’re not made to last forever. You need to make sure that you’re inspecting them for mold or anything like that to let you know that they’re past their prime. However, I store mine in airtight containers and they will last a long time. Also, you can use mylar bags along with oxygen absorbers and store them for long-term, shelf-life stability.
