Fun Facts About Lego

My boys are obsessed with all things Lego. So I decided to look into some Fun Facts to share!

1. LEGO is a singular and plural word.
According to the LEGO company, the word LEGO is singular and plural. Although many people say LEGOs, the official stance is that the LEGO is also the word for the interlocking bricks when you have more than one.

2. LEGO bricks weren’t introduced until 1949.
Imagine having a toy that’s stood the test of time for 68 years! LEGO bricks have been played with and loved by generations of building enthusiasts since the mid-20th century. The LEGO company started in 1932 – 17 years before the brick was born.

3. A brick today would work with a brick from 1949.
Many toys lose their ability to adapt to the changing world and demands of new generations, but LEGO has held strong. They have stayed true to their original designs and continue to make LEGO pieces (also known as bricks) that interlock with the same ones that were created 68 years ago.

This versatility makes it easy for parents to share their old LEGO sets with their children and continue the tradition of imaginative building.

4. A real house was built using over 3 million LEGO bricks.
In 2009, a man in the UK decided to build a house entirely out of LEGO bricks. People came from all over to see it and to help in the build. LEGOland considered purchasing it, but decided not to after calculating moving costs. Unfortunately, the house was demolished because the land owners needed the space for their vineyard.

5. The tallest LEGO tower in the world is in Delaware.
High school students from Red Clay Consolidated School District in Delaware built the tallest LEGO tower in the world. It stands 112 feet high (11 stories) and contains more than 500,000 LEGO bricks!

The majority of bricks were donated by the people in the town and in 2013, the tower was classified as the tallest in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records.

6. LEGO is in the Toy Hall of Fame
Known for honoring toys that have stood the test of time and made an impact on play, the Toy Hall of Fame inducted the LEGO brick in 1998. It was one of the first toys to be honored.
