Hot chocolate, winter white hot chocolate, and coffee are staples in our home. Hot chocolate for the kids and coffee for the adults- err well, my husband and dad. And occasionally we’ll all partake in some hot chocolate with marshmallows around a fire pit. That’s the perk of being an adult – the ability to choose.

Since the trend last year was hot chocolate bombs, we decided to go in a different direction by creating homemade mug toppers instead.

Not only are they adorable, but they’re also delicious and edible, too! Having this little gingerbread house or gingerbread star sitting on the rim of your mug is sure to bring a smile to your face.

Once you’re done drinking your drink, you’ll be able to then eat the treat and enjoy the flavor explosion on your taste buds.

There is one other thing that is a MUST have for this recipe. Well,  I guess not a must-have if you’re a better free-hand cookie cutter than I am….but I believe getting a nice mini gingerbread house cookie cutter set is definitely needed. You can get one like mine by clicking below.

How To Make Mini Gingerbread House Mug Toppers

1) In a large bowl, mix together all the ingredients for the gingerbread until it forms a ball.

2) Next, wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight.

3) When ready, roll the dough out between two sheets of parchment paper until it is 1/8 of an inch thick. Use your mini gingerbread house cookie cutters to cut out your cookies. You will need 12 of each shape to make 6 houses.

4) Arrange the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the oven for 5 minutes at 350 degrees F. Let the cookies cool completely before assembling with icing and decorating.

Icing Directions:

1) Mix all the icing ingredients together in a bowl by using an electric hand mixer or whisk. Start by adding only 1 tablespoon of water. Add another tablespoon if needed after mixing.

2) Beat the icing for 5 minutes until it is smooth.

3) Your icing is ready and should be used immediately.

Why is my gingerbread not sticking together?

More than likely your cookies are too warm. You’ll need to allow the cookies to completely cool before adding the icing. Once you add the frosting, you also need to give it time to set up. This can take a while so be patient during the process, otherwise, the mug topper will fall apart.

How long will it take the icing to harden?

It’s hard to put a timeframe on it, but I would say 10 minutes or so per side. You’re going to want to use your best judgment here and you may find that you need to let them harden longer as well.

Can you add fun decorations to these homemade mug toppers?

Absolutely. The kids can treat this like they’re making a gingerbread house, just a mini version of one! Sprinkles are always a fun topping idea as is crushed peppermint or even crushed Oreos.

How do you store leftover mug toppers?

Since this recipe makes quite a few, you’re going to want to carefully store them in an airtight container to maintain their freshness and keep the gingerbread from going stale.

You don’t have to store these in the fridge. The countertop or pantry is fine.

Fun Ways To Share Mug Toppers With Others

This is actually a really fun holiday family tradition to start. If you’re not one to make homemade cookies for the holidays, pivot and make these mug toppers instead.

The kids can join in on the fun as well and create a really great and simple treat. There’s nothing like drinking a hot cup of cocoa to finish it off by eating the gingerbread.

The other fun way to share this treat with family and friends is to put it into a gift box and give it as a homemade holiday gift. You can even add in the mug and hot cocoa mix so that all they have to do is create.

We’ve even made the cookies and frosting ourselves and delivered these to family and friends as a fun “kit” for them to put together and enjoy!

I can’t wait to hear what you think about this Gingerbread Mug Topper! It’s just a fun and delicious way to celebrate the holiday season with decorations and a DIY treat! So much fun to make!
