Traveling and Friendship

During the past few weeks, I have been blogging mostly about our trip across country. You can read HERE and HERE for the other posts I have done in this series.

This week I would like to share about friendship. There are some friendships that come along early in life. You latch on and don’t let go.  In Anne of Green Gables, Anne Shirley refers to these type of friends as “Bossom Buddies.”  I have been blessed in life with a lot of friends. I came from an area where most everybody knew everybody, especially if you went to school together. I remain friends with many I attended school with and they have truly blessed me.  One such friend I met in middle school when I was 12. Kim and I connected right away. I think it may have been our wonderful gift of gab that linked us together but I am not sure :).  It is difficult to think back to the time before she and I were friends. We remained friends throughout school and our friendship developed a tighter bond in high school.  We were in band together, tried out for the flag corps together (we both made it!) and spend most of the summer together between school years.  We would practice and walk to her house on breaks because she lived close to the school.  During our senior year, Kim and I made a pact that if a certain circumstance occurred, we would stick by our decision and remain true to our friendship.  Unfortunately, that circumstance did occur and we both walked away from the flag corps and never looked back.  Eventually, it all ended up okay in the end.  Kim eventually married and moved away.  She and I have been apart for years, only to reconnect through social media and occasional telephone calls.  We have seen each other only three times in the last 17 years because of various military moves between both of our families, but we have never stopped being friends. We can always reconnect like no time has ever passed. I am incredibly blessed to have this lady in my life. She is a wonderful friend, wife, and mother, but most important, she is a Sister in Christ and a servant of the Most High.

I look back from the time we were young girls to now and I am so proud of the person Kim has become.  During our trip across country, we traveled down to southern California, where Kim lives, and spent the day with her and her family.  We had a wonderful time taking in Hollywood, or as Kim affectionately refers to it, Hollyweird 🙂 The minute Kim and I saw each other it was like 1995 (our graduation year) never happened and we saw each other every day! Friendships like that are priceless, rare gems. I know Kim is my prayer warrior, a battle buddy, and a confidant regardless of distance, time, or military moves.

As military wives, we move a lot and so we learn quickly to make friends fast, hold on to them, and many times those friendships end up forming into a true sister friendship.

That is what happened with my friend Reina. We don’t have the years of history that Kim and I have, but we became friends almost immediately in Washington.  The moment we made our introductions to one another, we connected and our friendship only grew. After a few months of friendship, Reina and her sweet family moved to Oklahoma while I cried like a baby and grieved.  I was heart-broken and missed her and her whole family terribly! When we found out we were moving (again) I mapped out how I could manage a trip through Oklahoma in order to see the whole family.  Thankfully, I have a patient husband who adores Reina and her family as much as I do!  It has now been almost a year since Reina and I first became friends, but you would never know by listening to us yap that we hadn’t known each other our whole life.  We are almost as different as night and day in parenting, but despite that, we find so many common grounds that none of that matters! She has listened to me cry, she has prayed for me, she has been there through several things and never wavered. She prays for my family and loves me despite my flaws. She is a battle buddy and dear sister in Christ.

When I think of either of these ladies, I think of Christ’s example of friendship in the Bible.  Ladies, in order to be friends we don’t have to agree on every topic. In order to be friends and make lasting friendships, we have to find a common ground something that we can cling to despite a few differences.  These things we cling to are part of the core common thread that ties us together, which is our personal relationship with Christ.
