I have the entire collection of G.A. Henty books that my husband blessed me with a few years back.  They are exceptional books for boys especially!

With Lee in Virginia is another wonderful book in the G.A Henty collection.  For this review, I was sent the audio version of the book.  With Lee in Virginia is based on the adventures of a fifteen-year-old boy, Vincent Wingfield, during the Civil War.  Vincent Wingfield finds himself in a thrilling adventure when he joins the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia.  Many times we read about the Civil War, but this book offers an exciting twist as we get to hear a story from a southerner’s perspective!  Reading, or in my case for this review listening, to the story unfold from this perspective helps us to understand exactly why the south was fighting the north in the first place.

One thing about G.A. Henty is that he will take you along through history in his books.  With Lee in Virginia is no exception!  Henty takes great care in explaining which constitutional issues are at stake during the Civil War.  As I listened to the story unfold, I was immediately drawn in.  The adventures of Vincent throughout the war are very entertaining and exciting after he joined the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia.  Soon, he is fighting alongside many of the famous Confederate generals like Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and Robert E. Lee!

Heirloom Audio Productions does an incredible job of presenting audio books as this is their third one.  The first was Under Drake’s Flag followed by In Freedom’s Cause.  Now they have their latest release of With Lee in Virginia and it is as remarkable as their previous releases!  My boys enjoyed this story as well!

So how did we use it?

During the summer months, we seem to get out of the house more often.  Of course this requires a lot of driving.  I slipped the audio book into the CD player in the car and we listened to the story while running errands, going to camps, VBS, etc.  Although it helped me to involve more school time for the boys, they thoroughly enjoyed the story and have asked to listen to it numerous times since.  We also brought it in the house several times to listen to it all the way through in one sitting.  This was a perfect addition to our summertime homeschool schedule!

The audio book also comes with a study guide!  We added the study guide and CD set to our curriculum.  As a huge Henty fan, I am so thrilled that I own a copy of not just one, but two of Heirlooms Audio Productions now!
