Over the summer we were blessed with a copy of Writers in Residence to review. I was hesitant to give this program two thumbs up. We all know how wonderful
Apologia is for Science, but what about writing? Could it be equal to or better than their other programs? Then I read this resource and downloaded the free samples. I got excited to see how this curriculum could help my family, especially my struggling writer.
When I received the package, I must say that I was impressed. The book was massive with over 500 pages of glorious curriculum! I sat down and flipped through the program to get myself familiarized. I love so many of Apologia’s programs and this one was already proving to be a great fit for my family!

Before I get into more about Writers in Residence I need to make a confession – I’m unashamedly a curriculum junkie! Curriculum is a happy spot, especially when it is amazing. Where was I? Oh, yea, Apologia.
The first few pages of the book are just for me…..uh, I mean, for all parents. LOL! These first few pages are a wonderful help to familiarize the parent with the scope and sequence, what to expect, and other important information. I also noticed this book was not cheaply made. The cover and the pages were both top quality.
As I continued flipping through this wonderful resource, I was slowly falling in love with the presentation of the lessons. Based on how well thought out and organized this curriculum was presented, a new homeschooler would have no problems teaching it.
I have one child that struggles with gathering his thoughts to make a creative-based story. This year we started the kids into Classical Conversations and this Apologia Writing program will fit comfortably with Classical Conversations. The curriculum can benefit a child who is participating the classical or Charlotte Mason approach!
The way that Writers in Residence is laid out is perfect for a writer who, well, doesn’t like to write. One of the goals for CC (Classical Conversations) is to help build strong writers! Your child begins by writing about a place from their childhood.
Are you waiting for the catch? That’s it! Just one simple thing to get the ball rolling! This gave my oldest confidence that he would be able to do complete program and do it well! Sometimes it is just a nudge that is needed.
After that first simple step, Writers in Residence will ask your child to work on topics like remembering their favorite people, remembering things they did with those people, and writing memory sentences. The text is divided into 6 units:
- Unit 1: I Remember
Writing Assignment: sentences - Unit 2: I Imagine
Writing Assignment : creative writing - Unit 3: I Investigate
Writing Assignment: research writing - Unit 4: I Think
Writing Assignment: opinion essay - Unit 5: I Remember
Writing Assignment: autobiography - Unit 6: I Imagine
Writing Assignment: short story
My kiddo who HAAAATES writing is actually enjoying this curriculum because of its simplicity and how it’s not overwhelming for him. As I stated earlier, it also is giving him confidence.
So how exactly will we add this in?
As you can see from the pictures, we are on vacation in a cabin! Fresh mountain air, beautiful scenery and lazy days. We decided to break our writing program in while traveling. It just so happened to fit our schedule perfectly. Also, lets face it, could you get a better view for studying?!
We will be adding this into our regular school week and work through the program as suggested with some minor modifications to fit our eclectic, Classical, Charlotte Mason mindset.

So far, however, we haven’t made any other adjustments as they simply have not been needed. Another item worth noting about this program is once a child is finished with their assignments they will have a keepsake in their writing portfolio. Excuse me as I return to my happy curriculum spot. 😉
The thing that always draws me to Apologia is their programs are Biblically based. Throughout the program I found articles shared from other Christian writers telling how they got started in their careers and was very impressed with that addition to the curriculum!
