Modest Monday: Being An Intentional Wife Trust
Being An Intentional Wife Trust
Last week we began our study on Proverbs 31. If you missed our discussion on a virtuous wife, you can click here to read it. This week we continue our study learning about trust.
“The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.” Proverbs 31:11-12
When I think about trust I think back to our first year of marriage. When Clay and I married we were head over heels in love; however, we sure had a lot of adjustments that first year!!! I have previously blogged here and here about our first years of marriage and let’s just say I had a lot of growing in the Lord to do. During our first year, Clay never felt I would cheat on him, so in that respect he trusted me; but in many ways, in Biblical ways, I can’t say that I gave him a lot of reason to trust me. I lived in a world of tit for tat – he wronged me so I wronged him. Since he didn’t do this, I am not going to do that. I wish I could say that it stopped there, but it didn’t. I had a way of belittling him, not in public, but at home. I belittled him in ways that could tear down the Apostle Paul. I did a great job in some aspects of our marriage, but in other ways I had no concept. I just didn’t pay attention to things that concerned my husband.
As you’re reading this, I sound like I have no advice to offer. If I wrote this blog during our first year of marriage, believe me, I would run too! However, the Lord did wake me up. It really wasn’t the first year though, it was more into our second and third year. I finally learned and realized that even if my husband made me mad, I was still responsible for my 100%.
Ladies, I am specifically speaking you to. Trust is about physical trust, but it also goes much deeper into emotional trust. The Bible says that In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise. Proverbs 10:19 It is going to be impossible to build up your husband and for him to emotionally trust you if you’re constantly tearing him down. I know that is hard to hear but it is true. I had to learn this the hard way. So, dear sisters, if you struggle with this, pray and ask God to help you over come this area of your life. Use your tongue to build up and not tear down. Also, remember this, if you have children at home they will learn the same behaviors that you exhibit. Ouch, right?!
Another area that is so important in trust is financial trust. Do you go shopping and hide your purchases? I am not talking about Christmas or Birthday gifts:). If you do, this is going to affect how your husband trusts you. Do you buy things you know you cannot afford? Over draw the bank account on a regular basis? Ladies, this area is important for us to learn how to handle better. I can go back to my first year of marriage again and tell you I had some HARD lessons to learn and honestly I am still a work in progress. During our first year of marriage we spent ALOT of money, when I say ALOT…it was a lot! The sad thing is that I can only name a few of those purchases. It’s also a shame that many of them have come and gone and not lasted. As we prepare for retirement from the Army, I wish more than anything I had learned that first year that someday that money would be nice for a house. However, as God has changed me, molded me and shaped me throughout our marriage, I have learned a lot about being a better steward of our finances, too. I am now the queen of thrifty clothing shopping. I love more than anything to find a good deal at Goodwill or any clothing store really. I also love to coupon and make our money stretch. Soon, I will be doing a whole series on frugal living. One thing I had to do honestly was confess to my hubby how awful I had been with the finances and not just give words that I would do better, but show him I would.
All these areas tie in together in doing him good and not harm. It’s so important to work on these specific traits ladies! I know changes are difficult to make, but I believe that God’s word is 100% true and we need to try our best. I know I still fail at times and that is where I am thankful for my husband’s unending love and mercy and the Lord’s too:). One thing that has helped me is to remember that every time I step out of the house, I am representing my husband and also the Lord.
