Modest Monday: Modesty and Friendship Part 2

Modesty and Friendship

Modesty and Friendship

When you think about a Godly friendship, what characteristics do you think of?

I reflect back to scripture for this and find the following:

A Godly friend is faithful

What does being a faithful friend mean?

  • Faithful friends are honest – They tell us the truth in love as Christ did on countless occasions.  Sometimes, even in love, this can cause us to get upset or lash out.  However, a faithful friend can generally bring grace that helps “soften the blow.”  An antonym of honesty is lying.  A faithful friend isn’t going to lie to you. If a friend cannot assist you (i.e. helping with dinner when you’re ill), they will just tell you why.
  • A faithful friend will stand by you no matter what – When I think about the characteristics of a faithful friend, I reflect on the scripture that says, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” I have many friends who have been there for me for many many years.  Those are the friends that are not just my battle buddies with the military, they are my battle buddies in life.  Regardless of the situations, we have always been there for each other.  This doesn’t mean we always agree 100% on every thing.  Instead, it means we have each others back and stick by each other no matter the severity of the storms.
  • A faithful friend will listen – Often, we get so wrapped up in our own life that we just talk, and talk, and talk. However, a faithful friend will listen. How long has it been since you sat with your friends and just listened?  This is the time we can learn what we should be praying about for them.  This is also the time we learn how to best serve them.  Most importantly, we grow our relationships through listening.

Friendship

We grow closer to each other
When we’re closer to the Lord,
The common faith that we share
Binds our hearts in one accord

For friendships last a life time
When built on Jesus Christ,
Throughout each different season,
We find we are in life

Friends are there through times of grief
And times when hope is gone,
Always there with encouragement
So we can carry on

So thank the Lord for giving you
A true and faithful friend,
To laugh with you, and cry with you,
On whom you can depend

For friends will stay no matter what,
Giving you support
And together your hearts truly unite
With the love of the Lord.
