Modest Monday….My Path to Modesty Part 1
By the worlds standards, I have always dressed modestly. My mom made sure of that growing up! :). She had no problem telling me no, regardless of how bad I wanted something. She would make me do the bend over test, the skirt length test, you get the picture! My Dad gave me a talk many times about how I need not show my skin to catch the attention of a man, that a real man would have nothing to do with a woman dressed like that. After all, my Dad who really had a shall I say wild life until he married my mom, married a woman who dressed like a lady!

Growing up, I was not allowed to wear pants to church. At all. It just didn’t happen. I didn’t really even ask as my mom always dressed up, and so did I. My brother wore ties and suits. We put on our Sunday best:). The only exception to this, ever was during the summer for Vacation Bible School. Then my mom would let me wear culottes because we would be running and playing games. As I grew older, the rule stuck. Sunday best for church, always. The modesty rules my mom enforced stuck as well. In 9th grade I remember leather skirts were the in thing. My mom had already bought my school clothes, I wanted one so bad! I talked about it constantly. I was surly a misfit for not having one right?!? 🙂 At this point I was working at my Dad’s offices cleaning, such a hard dirty job for $20 a week, but THAT is another story! I REALLY wanted to earn my own money. I put it aside and would use it for school band trips and Christmas, things like that. Mom finally told me, if I could find a skirt a decent length, I could buy it myself. SIGH. My whole life was unfair, just over this skirt in general. KIDDING! She was right, but don’t tell her that!
The search began, I think mom probably felt that I would never find one she approved of, and that would be that lol. Everyone I showed her was to short, to tight, to something. I was desperate. Then one day I found it. A leather skirt that was long enough, and not too tight! YAY!!! It was green, I didn’t really like green BUT who cares right? I also got it for $20. I was on TOP of the world! I was no longer a misfit, my mom was awesome because she let me get it. I wore that skirt at least once a week that year. I loved it.
In high school, I was in band and I was on the Flag Corps. The skirts were long, no modesty issues. I wore very long prom dresses, but honestly most everyone else did too. As I entered college is where I guess I decided to toss some of my training. I didn’t really dress bad, and mostly I dressed better than a lot in the modesty department. I don’t think anyone would pin me with the title of immodest, I still ALWAYS dressed up for church, but I wore more and more some of the things the world did.

I love this headscarf! It matches the yellow and purple so well in my outfit. Then it ties together the black belt I wore too! 🙂

Headscarf: Garlands of Grace. They make beautiful headscarves and headbands! I love this company. So easy to work with!
