Modest Swimsuits

Spring is now officially here and right around the corner is swimsuit season.  I have already begun to see many friends and acquaintances posting their favorite swimsuits on Facebook and Pinterest.  Some of the swimsuits I have seen are gorgeous.  Other swimsuits I have seen makes me wonder why not just wear bras and panties.  When did it become okay to wear these skimpy swimsuits in public, but not our undergarments (that’s a rhetorical question and I’m not asking anyone to make a statement by running out in your undergarments…lol).  My friend Caroline last summer did a series of posts on this exact thing.  Why is it okay to wear bikini’s but not bras and panties in public?  If your interested in her series, I recommend you clicking HERE, HERE, and HERE.

Everyone has a different opinion of what a modest swimsuit is and even my opinion has changed over time (I was never a bikini girl though!).  So for this we need to seek out the scriptures and see what they say.

Women are told to adorn themselves in modest apparel. There is not an exception to swimwear. The Bible does not say that it is okay that women are modest unless they are at the beach, the pool, or wherever else you may wear a swimsuit.  Ladies, we need to remember our responsibility given to us in the scripture to find a modest swimsuit. Mothers, I encourage you to train and teach your daughters how to pick out modest swimsuits and why it is so important.  Other women, girls, men and boys are gazing their eyes upon you in what is nothing more than your underwear.

Wearing modest swimwear does not mean you’re insecure about your body.  It doesn’t mean that you’re old-fashioned or a prude.  Honestly ladies, there are some 2 piece suits that are really cute.  I know your thinking, “I thought you didn’t wear bikinis?”  I don’t wear bikinis.  I’m sure you’re also thinking, “You were just talking about modesty, but you’re saying two pieces are cute?”  I’m still a girl who finds different things “cute”.  Here is how I view it though. It is a sacrifice for our brothers and a sacrifice for our husbands.  Most important, it is a sacrifice for God.  Ladies, while we may like the bikinis and think they are so cute and pretty, even though we can wear a bikini, it doesn’t mean we should.  All things are permissible, but not all things are lawful.  Just because I can go 80 miles an hour down the road doesn’t mean I should.  Same with the bikini.  In my prom dress post HERE, I mentioned that a guy is responsible for his own sin.  YES! Absolutely.  However, we are responsible if we intentionally place them into a trap that causes them to stumble.  When we send our teenage sons, our brothers, our husbands, our nephews, our friends to the swimming pool, we are essentially placing them in a trap.  Listen, I’m not saying to shelter these people by buying a “kiddie pool” from the store and making them stay home.  There will come a time in all of our lives when we are tempted.  However, when we allow ourselves, our daughters, our nieces,  and so forth, to wear these bikinis, we are tempting these men.  We begin to wonder why our sons are watching porn, why our daughters are asking questions to their friends, but not their parents.  I am not saying that bikinis are the sole problem of these two examples; but, when is the last time you knew someone who drank alcohol or smoked cigarettes without first being introduced?  It’s the same with bikinis.  These two-piece swimsuits are not the only reason for lust, but they are contributing factor.  Think about that next time you’re at a water park or a swimming pool.  Watch the eyes of adolescent boys and men.
