When it comes to making certain that you properly feed your bearded dragon, you’re going to want to ensure you are providing not only healthy ingredients but also ingredients that are safe for your bearded dragon.

This is because your bearded dragon is a pet that needs to have healthy ingredients on hand to fuel its body and continue to help them grow. Feeding them fresh veggies and fruits is a great way to give their bellies exactly the nutrients that they need to sustain a healthy life.

What type of vegetables do bearded dragons like to eat?

Believe it or not, they’re not very picky eaters, sort of. Every dragon will have nuances that will make you scratch your head. For example, I have a friend whose beardie picks out the butternut squash and leaves everything else. But my bearded dragon likes collard greens, mustard greens, broccoli, cabbage, and absolutely loves kale. My beardie will also eat bell peppers, squash, and cilantro straight from my garden.

What Items Do You Need For Your Bearded Dragon

What type of fruit do bearded dragons like to eat?

The most popular fruits for bearded dragons are apples, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, and watermelon. Bearded dragons really enjoy these succulent treats. However, keep in mind that although many of these fruits contain important nutrients, too much fruit can also be harmful.

Can you mix vegetables and fruits into their salad?

You bet! This helps keep the salads interesting, especially for younger bearded dragons. However, fruits should be fed on occasion and not for every meal. Fruits are more like occasional treats.

Tips for Making a Salad for your Bearded Dragon

Even though it’s fairly simple to make salads for your pet dragon, there are a few tips to keep in mind.

Don’t clean the veggies or fruit with a “cleaner”

You’ll find that some of these products are sold in stores and many people will use them, but I don’t recommend them at all. If you want to wash off the fruit or vegetables, just rinse them in clean water. If you purchase your vegetables from your local grocery store, this is an important step as you don’t know if the product has pesticides. Pesticides can be fatal to a bearded dragon.

Make the pieces bite-sized

Remember that you’re feeding tiny mouths! Any fruit or vegetable you feed your beardie needs to be small. The rule of thumb is the size should be no bigger than the space between their eyes. Anything bigger can cause your bearded dragon could choke.

Fresh salads are a good idea

Bearded dragons are naturally curious creatures. You’ll see them lick everything in their vicinity to see what’s edible. This includes fresh vegetables and not-so-fresh vegetables. It is important you provide a fresh salad daily.

And if you really want to spruce up their salads, don’t be afraid to add in live plants such as prickly pear cacti, succulents, or aloe plants, just to name a few.

Are you ready to learn how to make these simple salad recipes? They’re so fast and easy to do!

Ingredients needed to make a salad for your bearded dragon

All you need are the following ingredients to make a delicious salad for your pet.

  • Collard greens
  • Mustard greens
  • Kayle (one o our beardie’s favs!)
  • Turnip greens
  • Yellow squash
  • Orange bell pepper
  • Apple
  • Strawberries

This list is not a complete list of what a beardie can. eat. Nor is it all we feed ours. We spend a lot of time making salads for many of our homestead animals each day. We take a lot of pride in serving them a complete, wholesome diet.

In the following two posts I cover more about what you need for your bearded dragon and also what is needed for their diet.

I also have a Bearded Dragon Daily Care Journal that is very helpful to have on hand. It goes over many things you will want to detail about your beardie and it also goes over more in-depth what a beardie can and cannot eat.

Back to the salads…

How to make a salad for your bearded dragon

Since all the ingredients are easy and fresh to have on hand, you can make this simple salad recipe three different ways.

The first step is the same for all three recipes. Tear or chop the greens into small, beardie bite-sized pieces. You can do a variety or you can do one at a time. Sometimes we mix it up, other times we pick one green and only one.

I honestly just tear them by hand and then chop them up as well.

It’s then that you get to decide if you’re making a veggie salad, a fruit salad, or a fruit and veggie salad for your bearded dragon.

To make a fruit salad:

Put the chopped greens in a bowl and add in chopped apples and strawberries. You can also add just apples, just strawberries- or you can even mix them. You can also select other safe veggies.

To make a veggie salad:

Put the chopped greens in a bowl and add in chopped veggies from the recommended ingredient list above or other safe veggies.

To make a fruit and veggie salad:

Put the chopped greens in a bowl and add in chopped apples and strawberries and veggies.

As you can see, these salad recipes are simple and don’t have anything hard about them! Your bearded dragon will think that he or she is royalty and eating like the king or queen that they are!

Use your vegetables from your garden

If you’re lucky enough to have a garden planted, use the veggies from there to make this salad recipe! That means that you’re using up what you planted and it saves you a trip and cost from having to go to the store!

This would also be a great way to have the kids help with the garden so that they can understand the importance of growing their own food for themselves and their pets!

Having a garden is the perfect way to feed your family and pets and save money, too.

Have fun making salads for your bearded dragon! It’s really a lot of fun to serve them and watch them gobble it up!
